Building community with healthy food on a budget sounds like something A Place at the Table would do, but today we feature two other organizations, the YMCA and Share our Strength, who are working together to also make this happen! Every year, the Y’s Annual Campaign raises money to support programs like Camp High Hopes, a summer camp where children can attend regardless of means. The camp, in addition to all the things you imagine a summer camp to do, provides a free breakfast and lunch, free swim lessons and also time with a teacher to keep skills sharp over the summer.
Recently, the Y has included Cooking Matters, a program developed by Share our Strength, that recruits food professionals–chefs, registered dietitians, nutrition educators–willing to volunteer their time to run 6-week course that teaches children and families about healthy food on a budget. During the camp’s cooking sessions, children were taught knife skills, learned about food groups, then prepared a healthy recipe. They also received groceries to take home to prepare the same recipe at home. Cooking Matters not only teach children how to prepare healthy food for themselves and their families but also shows them that they matter to people in the community other than just to their parents and families.
Here’s a video about Cooking Matters at Camp High Hopes.
If you’d like to support the Y’s Annual Program in our area, visit YMCAtriangle.org/give-back.
Just $166 will cover the cost of one child going to camp for the summer, including transportation.
Thank you all for your support! We look forward to seeing you all at our next Pop-Up and will be sending more information out about it soon!
